YPSILANTI, MI - April 18, 1999 - Freedom Imaging Systems (Freedom), a leading data management and solutions developer in the United States, announces that Sonora Quest Laboratories selects Freedom to implement a new imaging and indexing system to improve efficiency, productivity and customer service. Freedom will be providing an integrated document imaging system that will allow the laboratory's staff to easily track and access electronic records while ensuring a quick response to staff and patient needs.
Under Freedom's system, scanners capture requisition information and transfer the images electronically from the laboratory to the billing department. Once the image is captured, Record Image Capture and Retrieval (RICAR) software electronically indexes them according to a barcode on the requisition. This customized system allows managers to secure certain requisitions to control who can obtain patient information.
"The system improves efficiency because the lab can access test and billing information at any time," said Chief Information Officer Bob Dowd, who oversees Sonora Quest's computer network information and imaging systems. "Before, information could have been anywhere - on someone's desk, in billing or at the lab. Now, we will always know where to find patient records."
Prior to instituting the Freedom system, requisitions were archived on microfilm and moved throughout the office via a paper-based system. Under this paper-based system, paper was required to queue in patient information, and indexing was completed manually. With Freedom's integrated system, the clinical laboratory will improve processing times and remove the difficulties of tracking and accessing paper documents.
Sonora Quest Laboratories, a clinical laboratory based in Phoenix, Arizona, processes over 10 million lab tests annually. A joint venture between Quest Diagnostics and Banner Health, Sonora Quest services over 5000 clients throughout Arizona, including hospitals, physicians and managed care organizations.
