YPSILANTI, MI – March 2008 – Freedom Imaging Systems (Freedom), one of leading data management and solutions developers for healthcare providers and clinical laboratories, is pleased to announce that Hawaii Pathologists’ Laboratory (HPL) has selected Freedom’s Optical Character Recognition software solution, FreeOCR, in order to enhance the automated search criteria for Explanations of Benefits (EOB) and more efficiently manage the secondary claims process.
In a system without FreeOCR, users must manually search each page of a sometimes large volume EOB in order to find the desired patient’s information, which is labor-intensive and time-consuming. With FreeOCR, HPL will be able to reduce search time to a few seconds by allowing users to automatically locate information on any page – single or multi-page documents - with approximately 95+% accuracy.
In 2007, HPL installed Freedom’s Record, Image, Capture And Retrieval (RICAR) software suite in order to manage incoming EOBs, requisitions and administrative documents. This has enabled the staff to electronically archive, sort, resort, transfer and distribute documents without the hassle of handling paper and manual searching.
Now, HPL wants to implement Freedom’s Optical Character Recognition component, FreeOCR, in conjunction with its current RICAR solution in order to tackle the difficult task of efficient searching, redacting and printing within any multi-page EOB document.
With the utilization of FreeOCR, the RICAR suite can automatically index the words on every document so that a full-text search can be performed based on different keywords. The recognized text is then stored in the imaging database to facilitate user “Text String Searching” to quickly locate a desired page within a multi-page document. FreeOCR improves the paperless environment by increasing the overall search efficiency of the RICAR system which will allow HPL to increase overall worker productivity and reduce costs and time-wasted.
While FreeOCR was designed primarily for Healthcare EOB documents, this solution can be used in any business, manufacturing facility or retail environment.
