YPSILANTI, MI – February 2008 – Freedom Imaging Systems (Freedom), one of the leading data management solution developers in the United States for clinical laboratories, announces that Spectrum Medical Laboratories, in Greensboro, NC has chosen Freedom’s Optical Character Recognition software solution, FreeOCR, in order to improve search efficiencies for their Explanations of Benefits (EOB) and to simplify the secondary claims process.
Currently, Spectrum uses Freedom’s Record, Image, Capture And Retrieval (RICAR) solution in order to scan and digitally manage requisition and EOB data within the laboratory. This has enabled the staff to easily track and access documents electronically without the hassle of handling paperwork and manual search. In addition to their paperless RICAR solution, Spectrum now wants to implement Freedom’s Optical Character Recognition component, FreeOCR, in order to tackle the task of efficient search, redact and printing within EOB documents, which are typically hundreds of pages long.
In a system without OCR, users must manually examine each page in order to find the desired patient’s payment, which is laborious and time-consuming. FreeOCR reduces search time by allowing users to automatically locate information on any page – single or multi-page documents.
With the enhancement of FreeOCR, the RICAR suite can automatically index all identifiable words and amounts on every document so that a full-text search can be performed based on different keywords. The recognized text is then stored in the imaging database to facilitate user “Text String Searching” to quickly locate a desired page within a multi-page document. FreeOCR improves the paperless environment by increasing the overall search efficiency of the RICAR system, thus increasing productivity and reducing costs and time-wasted.
While FreeOCR was designed primarily for Healthcare EOB documents, this solution can be used in any business, manufacturing facility or retail environment.
